Overpayments are a rampant problem in the unemployment insurance system. The federal government and states overpaid an estimated $14 billion in benefits in fiscal 2011, or roughly 11% of all the jobless benefits paid out, according to reports from the U.S. Labor Department.
Of the states, Indiana was the worst offender, making more improper payments than it did correct ones.
So, there's waste. Get over it. Find it, root it out, cut it.
And yes- let's examine our so-called essentials and see if there aren't things that the market could do more efficiently than government. That's waste, too.

I find the unemployment insurance appeals system to be frustrating. (It was such a case I took up to the Indiana S.Ct. -- waiting on the decision).
Another good place to look long and hard for wasteful spending and practices is the social security disability system. It's great when it's actually working as a safety net for the disabled. But, in my debt collection business, I've seen plenty of apparently able bodied people who seemed to look at it as a golden ticket. The wait times in the evaluation process were unreal. Needy people don't get help fast enough, and deadbeats don't get bounced out of the application process fast enough.
